Authors Marcia King-Gamble and Kathleen Lawless interview
A Florida vacation always includes a visit with a dear friend and author, Marcia King-Gamble. It’s my pleasure to ask her and fellow author Kathleen Lawless about their latest book, Last Chance Beach: Summer’s End, a special romance collection of 14 all-new short stories from bestselling and award-winning authors. An ebook collection just in time for those of us thinking of a beach escape!
Thanks so much for joining us today. Where did the idea for this multi-author ebook series and theme come from?
KL – The Romance Gems are a diverse group writing in different romance genres, and we thought it would be fun to pool our talent for the readers. I believe the legend of Last Chance Beach has been percolating around for some time.
MKG – I’m a recent addition to The Romance Gems blog group. Kathleen was kind enough to recommend me. The talented bestselling, author team spearheading the blog came up with the idea. There is even the legend of Last Chance Beach.
Can you tell me / my readers about your novellas?
KL – Blue Sky Summer is a second chance romance and the launch for me of a new series titled Blue Sky Island. My hero and heroine parted ways badly 15 years earlier, and when their paths cross on Last Chance Beach they need to acknowledge their feelings and put the unresolved past to rest.
MKG – My story, One Last Shot is about a squeaky-clean sitcom star whose alleged sex tape goes viral. She escapes to the beach and the old family summer home. Renting next door is a disgraced celebrity photographer. Will he out her?
What did you most like about writing this series? Would you consider doing another multi-author collection?
KL – This was a fun departure, as all 14 of us collaborated to create the island of Last Chance Beach including local businesses and colorful characters we needed for our stories. I can’t wait to see how the area grows and develops with each boxed set of stories. My favorite part is the historical legend of Last Chance Beach, it really fired up the muse.
MKG – There’s already another collection in the works. This was my first time working with thirteen other authors, and I really enjoyed the back and forth of creating an island from scratch. As you know. I’m an island girl, so I had a lot to draw from.
What’s next for you?
KL – There are other Last Chance Beach projects in the planning phase, plus several series of my own, historical, and contemporary, that I’m working on. I’m also involved in a couple of Mail Order Bride multi-author projects of stand-alone books within the series.
MKG – I just released By Heart, second in the H.E. Caldwell series about the black owned department store that almost went under. Following that are two projects with no release dates attached as yet. I’m going off in an entirely different direction and having fun getting back my muse.
How do you know each other? Have you worked together before?
KL – Marcia and I have been friends through RWA (Romance Writers of America) for many years and have always wanted to work together, so this box set gave us that opportunity.
MKG – Kathleen’s right. We’ve been talking about a collaboration for years. We have similar voices, and we think alike. Now want to hear about the legend we’ve been talking about?
The Legend of Last Chance Beach:
This is the thumbnail version. Back in the day, poor guy begs passage on a wealthy ship owner’s vessel. Poor guy falls in love with ship owner’s daughter and gets banished to the ship’s hold. He later escapes. Ship owner’s daughter goes to find him, runs out of money, and ends up at Last Chance Beach. She is rescued by the same minister and his wife that had earlier rescued the poor guy when he made it ashore battered and bruised. The two reunite.
LAST CHANCE BEACH (Kindle Edition) is the island paradise where Dreams go to live again, and Wishes may come true. It’s Summer’s End on the island, and the cottages, condos, hotels, and bungalows are filled to capacity.
