Walking and writing

Staring at a computer screen seldom helps me figure out a scene, or the direction of a new idea for a book. Instead I love to get out and walk, often for hours at a time. In June, I took long walks in the hills of the southwest Irish coast…

Hiking in Ireland

We’re home from two weeks in Ireland, most of which we spent hiking on the southwest Irish coast. Gorgeous! Here’s a shot of Gleninchaquin falls on the Beara Peninsula. We were there once in winter…it’s a beautiful area anytime of year. I could picture archaeologist Sophie Malone and Boston detective Scoop Wisdom meeting at an [...]

Old Irish copper mines

Copper has long played a role in the lives of the people of the southwest Irish coast, and when we ventured to Allihies and the abandoned mines on the tip of the Beara Peninsula, I knew the beautiful scenery and history of the area would play a role in my books. In THE ANGEL, Boston folklorist [...]

Springtime in Boston

THE MIST opens on the southwest Irish coast, but much of the action takes place in Boston, “my” city. I went to college there, lived there and still visit often. In fact, I was there last Thursday! I love to walk through Boston Public Garden, especially in springtime. Here’s a photo we took last spring [...]

THE MIST in paperback today!

THE MIST ‘officially’ goes on sale in paperback today! The story takes place in Ireland, Boston and Maine as amateur spy Lizzie Rush and real spy Will Davenport go after a thrill-seeking billionaire with his own personal hit list. I took this picture of sheep on a misty, windy late December day. We were the [...]

Irish stone circle

In THE MIST (due out in paperback on March 30), hotelier and amateur spy Lizzie Rush takes on a would-be killer in an Irish stone circle. I drew inspiration from my own visits to stone circles, but I just kept my eye out for cows! I stood in the middle of this stone circle (Beara [...]

Maine sunrise

I saw these photos of a “down east” sunrise and thought any one of them would be a great backdrop for a book cover! I love the art for the reissue of ON FIRE…the colors are more fiery sunset than these quiet dawn colors. I should be seeing art for COLD DAWN soon. Hm..

Maine in the mist

This photo puts me right back on the coast of Maine…a perfect day for a bowl of fish chowder!

The rocky Maine coast

Ah…this photo brings back memories of walking on the rocks on the Maine coast. I also love to sit on a boulder and watch the lobster boats — with a book in hand! Renting a cottage “down east” is the perfect way to relax.

ON FIRE takes us to the Maine coast

I love the Maine coast and spend a lot of time there. ON FIRE, which starts on a small island off the Maine coast, is back in print in late January with a stunning new cover. It’s a stand-alone story — Riley St. Joe and FBI agent John Straker go after a killer…who just might [...]

COLD RIVER in Times Square

COLD RIVER made it to the Jumbo Tron in Times Square. Wish I’d been there to see it! I’m told that 1.5 million people pass through Times Square every day. I hope to be one of them before the end of the year…
Have a great day,
Carla

Let it snow!

We had a quiet, if somewhat gloomy, day for Thanksgiving and a wonderful time with family. We thought we’d have snow last night, but we missed it, although other parts of Vermont didn’t. Here’s another “cold river” shot from last winter. I like to stay on trails when I’m out snowshoeing. This scene reminds me [...]

An Ireland “cold river”

I took this picture on a walk to Sheen Falls in Kenmare when I was in Ireland in September, writing THE WHISPER and getting ready for COLD RIVER to hit stores. Today’s “pub” day — which means publication day, but I’ll be celebrating with a visit to our favorite local pub for traditional Irish music [...]

Winter in Vermont

No major snow yet, but soon it will look like this here in Vermont. I tried to capture this atmosphere — the light, the sky, the view — in writing both COLD PURSUIT and COLD RIVER, which debuts tomorrow.
Have a great day,
Carla

A quiet, cold river

I love this time of year in northern New England. It’s so quiet! Here’s another “cold river.” No ice and snow yet, though. Hard to believe that one week from today COLD RIVER will be in stores. I always have a book on hand when I’m preparing for the holidays. I peel some apples for [...]

Double Irish rainbow

They say to fight jet-lag you should exercise, get some sunlight and immediately adopt the time zone of your destination. Which I did when I arrived in Ireland in September. It was raining, but the skies cleared a bit and I went for a long walk. When I got back to the garden at my [...]

Frosty November morning

I’m just back from a long walk on a frosty morning. The gorgeous autumn foliage is off the trees, and the landscape is bare and open. Today’s very quiet. I could hear the river, a few crows in the distance and squirrels scurrying through fallen, dried leaves. There wasn’t even a slight breeze. COLD PURSUIT is [...]

Vermont rainbow

I saw some gorgeous rainbows on my September “retreat” to Ireland, but here’s a Vermont rainbow. We were at peak fall foliage. What a sight! The leaves have fallen now, and it’s quiet here. The leaf-peepers have gone home and the skiers haven’t yet arrived. I love the quiet, but I also enjoy having tourists [...]

A walk in the Irish hills

I snapped this photo on one of my 8-mile walks in the Irish countryside. I remember hearing nothing but the breeze and the occasional moo of a cow…

Early morning in Vermont

This is a typical winter morning sight for us as we have our coffee.

Vermont farmhouse

This scene reminds me why I still love winters in northern New England.

Dam on the Ottaquechee

The picturesque Ottaquechee River winds through our part of Vermont. Simon Pearce, an Irish glassblower, converted an old mill on the dam into a showroom and restaurant. It’s a “must see” on a trip to Vermont!

Sunrise after the ice storm

Ice can be so dangerous…but also beautiful.

Sunrise on our hilltop

Imagine what I’d miss if I weren’t an early riser!

Covered bridge over the Ottauquechee

I drive over this covered bridge every day. It can get slick when the spray is coming off the river and freezing on the road!

A Vermont ‘cold river’

Here’s a shot Joe took of a snowy river. We love to snowshoe along riverbanks, but we’re careful to stay on trails.

Winter sunrise

I saw this vibrant sunrise from my office window. We love this very old sugar maple!

Irish rainbows!

This morning rainbow over Kenmare lasted for a long time. I walked out to Sheen Falls and back, and it hadn’t faded yet.

The spring “thaw” on the Ottauquechee

Vermont locals and tourists will recognize the dam by Simon Pearce on the beautiful Ottauquechee River.

Irish rainbows!

I saw some spectacular rainbows during my recent “retreat” on the southwest Irish coast.
