Hiking in Ireland

We’re home from two weeks in Ireland, most of which we spent hiking on the southwest Irish coast. Gorgeous! Here’s a shot of Gleninchaquin falls on the Beara Peninsula. We were there once in winter…it’s a beautiful area anytime of year. I could picture archaeologist Sophie Malone and Boston detective Scoop Wisdom meeting at an isolated Irish ruin!

Old Irish copper mines

Copper has long played a role in the lives of the people of the southwest Irish coast, and when we ventured to Allihies and the abandoned mines on the tip of the Beara Peninsula, I knew the beautiful scenery and history of the area would play a role in my books. In THE ANGEL, Boston folklorist Keira Sullivan investigates a mysterious story told to her in a Boston kitchen by a woman whose Irish grandfather told it to her — he’d first heard it himself in the copper mines. In THE MIST, Will Davenport and Lizzie Rush are back on the Beara Peninsula, ultimately because of that same old story. Life and fiction have a way of going in directions we can’t always foresee…but it can be lots of fun!

Springtime in Boston

THE MIST opens on the southwest Irish coast, but much of the action takes place in Boston, “my” city. I went to college there, lived there and still visit often. In fact, I was there last Thursday! I love to walk through Boston Public Garden, especially in springtime. Here’s a photo we took last spring of the manmade pond where the famous Swan Boats operate during the warm-weather months. In THE ANGEL, folklorist and artist Keira Sullivan comes upon a dead body there — but it’s ficton!

THE MIST in paperback today!

THE MIST ‘officially’ goes on sale in paperback today! The story takes place in Ireland, Boston and Maine as amateur spy Lizzie Rush and real spy Will Davenport go after a thrill-seeking billionaire with his own personal hit list. I took this picture of sheep on a misty, windy late December day. We were the only car on the Healy Pass. Incredible and memorable trip.

Irish stone circle

In THE MIST (due out in paperback on March 30), hotelier and amateur spy Lizzie Rush takes on a would-be killer in an Irish stone circle. I drew inspiration from my own visits to stone circles, but I just kept my eye out for cows! I stood in the middle of this stone circle (Beara Peninsula) on a misty Irish night.

I saw these photos of a “down east” sunrise and thought any one of them would be a great backdrop for a book cover! I love the art for the reissue of ON FIRE…the colors are more fiery sunset than these quiet dawn colors. I should be seeing art for COLD DAWN soon. Hm…

Ah…this photo brings back memories of walking on the rocks on the Maine coast. I also love to sit on a boulder and watch the lobster boats — with a book in hand! Renting a cottage “down east” is the perfect way to relax.

ON FIRE takes us to the Maine coast

I love the Maine coast and spend a lot of time there. ON FIRE, which starts on a small island off the Maine coast, is back in print in late January with a stunning new cover.
